CIT SESSION I
By Dawson School
Are you age 14 or 15 and want to experience working with kids? Do you want the opportunity to learn and gain leadership skills in a fun and exciting environment? If you are interested in being a future day camp counselor, you can attend the Counselor in Training (CIT) Leadership Program. Under the guidance of a Leadership Coach, the CITs will explore different styles of leadership and learn the importance of being a good role model. The CITs will learn the ins and outs of working at Dawson Summer Camps and the skills and responsibilities of working with younger children. The CITs will have opportunities to shadow counselors of younger campers, assist staff in their camp activities, and serve as a positive role model for campers. Participants will also enjoy the camp experience of the Dawson pool and lunch in the Dining Commons. To improve the learning process, we recommended CITs attend the program for two weeks, though the weeks do not need to be consecutive. Graduates of this program will receive an official Dawson Leadership Certificate. Program participants could also qualify for NHS and school volunteer hour requirements, and qualify to apply to be a paid Counselor at Dawson Summer Camps at age 16.
The program is offered for 3-week-long sessions: June 8, June 15 (4 days), and June 22. Registration does not guarantee acceptance. Applicants need to apply for the program, and selection is based on their video submission. Spaces are limited. The first three days of the first week the participants will focus on “staff and leadership training,” and the last two days are spent working with a camp as a Junior Counselor. For the second week, CITs will continue to improve by working the entire week with an assigned camp. Each day, the CITs are working in a camp, they will continue to meet with their Leadership Director to discuss methods and modifications. In addition to the Dawson Leadership Certificate, each CIT will receive a written evaluation from multiple directors and will conduct a self-evaluation. The leadership training in this program will teach future camp counselors about themselves and their leadership style, and the CDEC licensed staff training will guide them on how to work at Dawson Summer Camps and work with school-age children in a camp setting. We look forward to offering this program to develop the future of camp leaders!
